THE SHOW RING

The Showing Section of the show is well worth a visit to see the cream of the show horses and ponies, saddle hunters, leading rein and first ridden, in hand ponies and welsh.

Also of special interest are all the rising star classes where the enthusiasts look for the up and coming future champions who could one day topple the current champions.

Held over five days in the peaceful and attractive tree surrounded arenas, the Show Ring is a must for those who love to watch quality, superb presentation and movement, the result of hours and hours of preparation and schooling by their dedicated riders.
Top show horses and ponies should all have that ‘look at me’ aura about them.

The Show Hack is an elegant animal that stands well over the ground, possibly leaning to the
classical thoroughbred bloodlines. It should be well schooled, going softly into the bridle with
even and flowing paces with good rhythm and fluency .The hacks are divided into two categories, the park hack up to 158cm and the hack, over 158cm.

The Show ponies are miniature hacks with excellent forward movement and yet must maintain
all the necessary pony characteristics. The top ponies are stunning to watch, and today are so
professionally ridden in their workouts by their very capable young riders. In 2006 it was a really stunning line up for the supreme title, of the two kiwi bred ponies, Aschbrooke Bo Peep and Eastdale Legacy and the imported Falconhurst First Class. Bo Peep, was awarded the supreme, and has since been sold to America.

Each year since its inception, the Saddle Hunter and Hunter Pony classes have gone from
strength to strength providing classes for well schooled quality workmanlike animals, usually
with more bone and substance, a good length of rein and standing well over their ground. They
are expected to provide a good gallop as part of their workout.
Another fast growing section is the Leading Rein where these young riders under eight years of age are
fun to watch, all beautifully turned out as are their
handlers who only act as a guide. Temperament of the
pony is a prime requisite where it is judged on 60%
safety and suitability, and 40% conformation and
paces. The same applies to the First Ridden ponies for
riders under 10 years. As was quoted by one parent,
”The First Ridden is the most important pony purchase a parent will ever make”. Another quote from a wellknown judge, ”These ponies do it for their
young riders because they want to and do it with a
smile.”
A new section introduced this year is the NZ Bred Pony for ponies that have been born on NZ
soil. Ponies from imported parentage are eligible as long as they are born in NZ.
Those interested in breeding or buying for the future will enjoy the In Hand Pony, Sporthorse
and Welsh classes which are always full of quality animals
Feature events of interest are the Working Hunter Pony and Horse titles on Wednesday morning, Saddle Hunter Pony title and the very prestigious Gee Wizz Equestrian Turnout on Thursday.

The HOY titles for Saddle Hunter Horse, Park Hacks, Leading Rein and First Ridden on Friday,
Hacks, Child Riders and Paced and Mannered Ponies on Saturday, and finishing with the Pony
of the Year and Supreme Pony on Sunday morning.
