Mounted Games
Excitement is mounting within the equestrian community and particularly within the mounted games fraternity – in 2013 NZ will host the World Teams Championships in conjunction with Horse of the Year! This event will see approximately 15 teams from around the world competing fiercely for the title of World Champions and preparations here are well under way.
A Development Squad of 20 riders was selected in October 2011 and is already in training with the NZ coach, Scott Borland and these riders will be in action at HOY this year.
Mounted Games are performed at top speed, with riders vaulting on, and jumping off ponies at a gallop, leaning down from the pony to pick up items off the ground, and performing handovers of equipment from one rider to another at incredibly high speeds.
The sport demands advanced physical skills, as well as high levels of horsemanship, coordination, fitness, and courage. Ponies must likewise be extremely brave but also obedient, well-schooled and have a “calm brain”.
Races aren’t timed – first one over the line wins - so the sport is very easy for everyone to follow and enjoy. Riders of all ages get involved with mounted games, from the under 12 year old “minis” to the 34+ “Veterans”.
New Zealand is a past holder of the World Teams Championships (Sydney 2008) and Northland’s Dee Cherrington is the current World Individuals Champion and a past holder of the World Pairs title. The NZ team has also competed at WEG in 2010 picking up a silver and bronze. The Southern Hemisphere Championships have also been won by New Zealand on both occasions the competition has run.
Enjoy the action!!!
